Roaring ‘20s: Jazz and Cabaret in Silent Film
In this exciting salon, we stepped into a 1920s speakeasy, right here at the Verdi Club in San Francisco, pairing sultry jazz vocal stylings with some behind-the-scenes knowledge of how the silent films of Hollywood began.
Tradition and Celebration: The Way of Tea with Alphorn Music
Together, we rang in the new year with a celebration by exploring the music and traditions of two unique cultures. Our audience was whisked away to the snowy hills of the Swiss Alps to hear the sounding of the alpine horn. Then, we hopped over to Japan to experience the traditional Japanese way of tea from an experienced tea practitioner.
Into the Woods | Les Miserables: A Journey Through Song and Story
Our third salon combined two iconic musicals, narrated together on stage for the first time. This staged concert brought together highlights from two beloved musicals, “Into the Woods” and “Les Misérables”, woven together with narration from a local storyteller to guide us through a journey of hope, perseverance, and love.
Call and Response: Conversations of Viola, Cello and Dance
Our second salon was a celebration of unexpected combinations of music, paired with contemporary dance and ballet performance.
While viola is not typically performed as a solo instrument, expert violist Alexandra Simpson transposed unique pieces to blend beautifully with James Jaffe's melodious cello to create a conversation between these two instruments, while dancer and choreographers Katie and Alex Roy expressed this work through contemporary ballet.
Bach, Guitar and Fashion
Thank you to all who came to our inaugural Salon Nr. 1! You lit up the Verdi Club with enthusiastic support for our artists, Leslie Rabine, fashion scholar, and Juri Yun, Guitar. Leslie set the stage by taking us on a journey through music and how fashion changed with it over time. Juri then played Bach and other works with his impressive artistic skills. We hope you enjoyed meeting with other guests at the buffet before the performances and exchanging with the artists over dessert afterward!
