Salon Nr. 11 - THE VISUAL LANGUAGE

  • Verdi Club 2424 Mariposa Street San Francisco, CA, 94110 United States (map)

"Visual language" can take us through a cinematic story or change how we feel about the real-life figures we see on television and dance. By breaking down the uses of classical visual grammar from the masters of moviemaking, Jason Mann, the filmmaker will take us through a discussion of how these tenets are either used, subverted, or neglected in today's cinema and media, from movies and streaming shows we all love to the news itself and political campaigns. We will also see how visual language is expressed through dance, performed by the Northern California Dance Conservatory.

Jason Mann - Filmmaker

Jason Mann is an award-winning American filmmaker known for directing and co-writing the HBO feature film The Leisure Class, produced by Matt Damon & Ben Affleck and Peter & Bobby Farrelly, in association with Miramax and Pearl Street Films. Mann won HBO’s Project Greenlight, an 8-episode docu-series following the making of a feature film. His short film, Delicacy, was shot in England and premiered at the Telluride and Tribeca film festivals. Mann received an M.F.A. in Film Directing from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s in Film Production from LMU in LA. He is also an accomplished cinematographer and editor, as with Radical Wolfe based on an article by Michael Lewis (The Big Short, Moneyball), featuring narration by Jon Hamm, named by Variety as one of the Best Documentaries of 2023, now on Netflix.
